PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State men’s basketball team defeated Northeastern State 86-78 on Wednesday. Grant Lozoya led the Gorillas with 26 points to push them to a win in their MIAA opener.
Pitt State knocked down 12 3-points against the RiverHawks. Northeastern’s only lead of the game came early in the first half, with the Gorillas taking control soon after.
The Gorillas led by as much as 17 points in the game. Northeastern outscored Pitt State in the paint 24-20, but the Gorillas made up for the differential by scoring 19 second chance points and 12 3-pointers.
Donovan Franklin notched 19 points and eight rebounds. Demetrius Levarity chipped in 13 and Marcel Cherry scored 11.
Hot first half lead Gorilla women past Riverhawks.
The Pittsburg State women’s team defeated the Riverhawks 75-65. Athena Alvarado’s paced the Lady Gorillas with a double-double, scoring 19 points and pulling down 14 rebounds to lead Pitt State in both categories.
Kaylee DaMitz finished with 12 points and six assists.
Northeastern shot only 31 percent from the field, including 25 percent in the first half. The RiverHawks missed all ten of their three-pointers in the first half.
