PITTSBURG — In the closing seconds of a one-score game, MIAA-leading scorer Grant Lozoya rose up from near half-court and nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer to maintain Pittsburg State men's basketball’s perfect MIAA record, pushing the Gorillas to a 77-76 win over Central Oklahoma.
Lozoya was hot the entire game, finishing 11-for-18 from the field for 28 points. Lozoya also led the Gorillas in rebounding with nine boards, while dishing out five assists.
Missed free-throws was the story late. Lozoya split two-free throws in the final 10 ticks, but UCO’s Ashford Golden missed the first of his one-and-one trip to the line, which led to Lozoya’s late second heroics.
Pitt State( 7-1, 2-0 MIAA) went into halftime up 41-36, but a quick flurry extended the lead to 53-44 with 15 minutes to go in the second half.
UCO clawed their way back, taking the lead with two minutes to go in the game.
Adarius Avery led Central Oklahoma with 25 points.
Lady Gorillas stay hot from deep
Pitt State’s Girls’ basketball team defeated Central Oklahoma 84-71, behind another team effort.
Shelby Lopez led the Lady Gorillas in scoring with 18. Lopez knocked down four of Pitt State’s 15 3-point field goals, and finished a blistering seven for 10 from the field.
As a team, Pitt State shot 55 percent from the field. Tristan Gegg was also hot from deep range, nailing four 3-pointers on her way to 14 points.
Kaylee DaMitz dished 10 assists and grabbed eight rebounds.
Ireon Smith and Blake Blessington led UCO with 14 points each.
